(Los Angeles, CA) April 30, 2008–Human Trafficking is a multi-billion dollar a year industry. It is the second largest criminal industry in the world today, just behind drug smuggling and has recently risen above arms smuggling.
These staggering facts prompted an effort to draw awareness and educate others regarding the dark world of human trafficking. The SOLD Project is a documentary and multi-media grassroots movement designed to educate people about the haunting reality of the child sex trade in Southeast Asia and the world, and to give them the tools to halt these atrocities.
Founded in 2006 by Rachel Sparks, The SOLD Project was formed as a means to provoke others into action towards this horrific injustice.
“I founded The SOLD Project after learning about the brutal sexual exploitation of society’s most vulnerable people – children,” said Sparks. “Through The SOLD Project I have embarked upon a life altering journey that has led me to meet child prostitutes as young as 4 years old, as well as meeting many of the predators who feed off of their innocence. My life permanently changed through these experiences and I have committed my life to searching for a way to make a difference.”
“Our main focus is in spreading awareness of what is a far too invisible reality,” shares Rachel Goble, Executive Director of The SOLD Project. “Empowering common citizens by equipping them with basic advocacy tools is essential.”
Set to release on Fall 2008, The SOLD Project will release it’s first collection of short films and hopes that by exposing this dark world that others won’t turn their back on this heartbreaking reality. “People are shocked by the rate at which it occurs, the fact that it exists in America, and that adult men & women are actually paying for sex with children,” says Sparks. “This is one social injustice that leaves no room for debate. Nothing justifies it, and there is no excuse to let it continue.”
“We want to put tools in the hands of the masses.” explains Dan Portnoy, producer of The SOLD Documentary. “It’s the only way for a chain reaction to happen at an exponential level.”
The horrifying facts surrounding child sex trafficking has drawn thousands to take a stand. Ghostly International’s Christopher Willits, who has been called “the center cell of a complex indie rock-avant-garde-electronic art Venn diagram in the Bay Area” (San Francisco Bay Guardian), and “The Picasso of Sound” (Tokafi Magazine), is lending his unique musical voice to The SOLD Project’s first web promotion.
SOLD releases it’s first web promotion to be embedded in websites, blogs, social networking profiles and it’s also available for download via podcast.
